An ancient Japanese way to rediscover energy, balance and inner peace
There comes a moment, in many people's lives, when they feel the need to come home. Not a home made of walls, but the inner one: their own centre, their own peace. Reiki is one of the simplest and gentlest ways to find that home again.
On this page I answer the questions I am asked most often: what Reiki really is, what it is for, whether you have to believe in it and how it is learned. In simple words, the way I like it.
Reiki is an ancient Japanese spiritual energy technique, discovered and spread by Usui Sensei when, meditating on Mount Kurama, he received enlightenment. Put simply, it is a natural way to reawaken your energy channels and let your vital energy flow freely within you again.
When this happens, body and mind find their balance: stress and anxiety ease, energy rises, and a deep sense of peace appears inside. Reiki works on physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing, all together. And the most beautiful thing is that once you have received it, it never leaves you: it stays with you for ever.
The Reiki I teach is the original Japanese Reiki of the Komyo ReikiDo school, founded by Rev. Hyakuten Inamoto.
Reiki is a Japanese word made of two characters: Rei, meaning universal, and Ki, the vital energy that flows in every living being. Reiki therefore means universal vital energy.
A person who practises it is called a Reiki practitioner. You become a practitioner from the first level, which allows you to treat yourself and your loved ones.
The practitioner places their hands on the body, or holds them a short distance away, and lets the energy flow. Something that surprises many people is that it is not the practitioner's own energy: the practitioner is a channel, not the source. That is why, after giving a treatment, the practitioner does not feel drained - quite the opposite.
Every person is different, and every treatment is different. The sensations people describe to me most often are:
Many people fall asleep. Some feel moved without knowing why: it is the body letting go of something it had been holding for a long time.
Reiki raises your vital energy and helps you find inner balance again. Among the benefits people notice most often:
Reiki does not replace medical care: it gently accompanies it, encouraging relaxation and harmony.
No. Reiki is not a religion and does not ask you to follow any creed: it sits alongside any faith, or none. You do not even need to believe in it beforehand.
As I always say: "Reiki does not ask you to believe. It only asks you to try, and to let your own hands tell you the rest."
Reiki is open to everyone: adults, young people, people of every age and background. To receive it you only need to relax and let go. To learn it you need no experience or special gifts: the first-level course is designed precisely for beginners. All it takes is the wish to open up.
The first level is the doorway to Reiki and takes a single day. Together we discover what Reiki really is and how to put it into practice straight away. In particular, you will learn:
At the end of the day you will receive the first-level manual and a certificate of attendance. Above all, you will take home something that stays for ever: the ability to channel Reiki energy, for yourself and for others.
